Essential Oils for Pregnant & Breastfeeding

Things you need to consider when using essential oils during pregnancy (Hal-hal yang perlu dipertimbangkan ketika menggunkan EO saat kehamilan):

  1. Not recommended using EO during pregnancy. But if you still want to use, a maximum of 1% dilution. Wearing essential oils whole without diluted is not recommended at all. Consider also the method of oil absorption when deciding on using essential oils. (Tidak disarankan menggunakan EO selama kehamilan. Tetapi, jika anda tetap ingin memakai, maksimal 1%. Memakai minyak esensial secara utuh tanpa diencerkan sama sekali tidak disarankan. Pertimbangkan juga metode penyerapan minyak ketika memutuskan memakai minyak esensial.)

  2. You should only use essential oils with a guide from a midwife or an obstetricians or an aromatherapist. (Anda sebaiknya hanya menggunakan minyak esensial dengan panduan dari seorang bidan atau dokter kandungan atau aromaterapist)

  3. You are not advised to use essential oils for everyday wear during pregnancy (Anda tidak disarankan memakai minyak esensial untuk dipakai sehari-­hari selama masa kehamilan.)

  4. During pregnancy, essential oils should not be used in the mouth (or drink), vaginal, and rectal areas. (Selama kehamilan, minyak esensial jangan dipakai di daerah mulut (atau diminum), vagina, dan dubur.)

  5. Selection of essential oils used should be limited for people with a history of low toxicity. There is no clear boundary between safe or insecure when using essential oils. So it is important to get guidance from experts. (Pemilihan minyak esensial yang digunakan harus dibatasi untuk orang-­orang dengan riwayat toksisitas rendah. Tidak ada batasan jelas antara aman atau tidak aman ketika memakai minyak esensial. Maka penting sekali mendapat bimbingan dari para ahli.)

  6. Some essential oils that are considered safe but should be restricted for pregnant women are Tea Tree, Sweet Orange, Lemon, Lavender. (Beberapa EO yang masih dianggap aman tetapi harus dibatasi selama kehamilan adalah Tea Tree, Sweet Orange, Lemon, Lavender)*

  7. Essential oils that are considered should be avoided for pregnant women: Bitter almond, Cinnamon, Clary sage, Clove, Coriander, Costus, Deertongue, Elecampane,Fennel, Horseradish, Hyssop Jaborandi leaf, dan Juniper berry. (Beberapa EO yang dianggap harus dihindari selama kehamilan adalah: Bitter almond, Cinnamon, Clary sage, Clove, Coriander, Costus, Deertongue, Elecampane, Fennel, Horseradish, Hyssop Jaborandi leaf, dan Juniper berry)

  8. If any of the following occurs to you, then you should not use essential oil (Jika salah satu dari hal berikut terjadi pada Anda, maka sebaiknya jangan gunakan essential oil) :

  • Have a history of miscarriage (Memiliki riwayat keguguran)

  • Ever experienced a bleeding event during pregnancy (Pernah mengalami kejadian pendarahan selama kehamilan)

  • Have epilepsy or heart problems (Memiliki masalah epilepsi atau jantung)

  • Have diabetes or diseases related to the liver, kidney and thyroid or blood clotting disorders (Memiliki diabetes atau penyakit yang berhubungan dengan hati, ginjal dan tiroid atau gangguan penggumpalan darah)

*Please contact your midwife or obstetricians or aromatherapist before use the EO during pregnancy. (Kontak bidan/ dokter kandungan/ ahli aroma terapi Anda sebelum menggunakan EO selama kehamilan)

Some essential oils that are considered safe for breastfeeding (Beberapa EO yang masih dianggap aman untuk ibu menyusui): Fennel*, Clary Sage, Lavender, Lemon, Sweet Orange, Lemongrass, Citronella (Stronger oils so use cautiously.)


*Fennel should not be used 10 days in a row (Fennel sebaiknya tidak digunakan selama 10 hari berturut-turut)


Some essential oils that should be avoided for breastfeeding (Beberapa EO yang mperlu dihindari untuk ibu menyusui): Blue Cypress, Carrot Seed, Cinnamon Bark, Dill, Hyssop, Idaho Tansy, Myrrh, Nutmeg, Peppermint, Rosemary, and Sage. Birch, Garlic, Onion, Wintergreen can affect blood clotting. (Birch, Garlic, Onion, Wintergreen dapat mempengaruhi pembekuan darah)


Use Essential Oil max. 1% dilution or use diffuser 5-10 drops within 250 cc water.(Gunakan Essential Oil tidak lebih dari 1% atau menggunakan diffuser 5-10 tetes ke dalam 250 cc air)


For booster milk production: 2 drops mixed with enough carrier oil (max. 1%) to massage the mother's breast once a day. Avoid the aerola area (Untuk meningkatkan produksi ASI, pijat area payudara (hindari puting) sehari sekali setelah menyusui)
